Improve Access to Plain-Language Grievance Information

To: State Departments of Corrections

Ask corrections agencies to publish clear, plain-language guidance so people in custody understand how to file a grievance and meet every deadline.

Grievance systems exist so that people in custody can report problems and seek a fair response. But the rules are often hard to find, written in dense legal language, or vary from one facility to the next. When information is unclear, valid concerns can be dismissed on technicalities such as a missed deadline or the wrong form.

What this petition asks for:

  • Plain-language summaries of the grievance process, available in every facility.
  • Clear, printed deadlines for each step and appeal level.
  • Consistent information about which form to use and where to get it.
  • Guidance made available in accessible formats and common languages.

These are reasonable, administrative improvements that support fairness and transparency for everyone involved.
