This Iowa Judicial Branch instruction guide, updated October 10, 2024, walks a filer through starting an appeal in the state eFile system. It directs the filer to complete and file rule 6.1401 Form 1, Notice of Appeal, in the original district trial court case, then switch to the Appellate system and open a new case, entering the county, trial court case number, judgment date and trial judge, and adding appellant and appellee parties. It covers uploading the Notice of Appeal under the Notice of Appeal document type, adding further documents, marking filings confidential or filed under order to restrict access, reviewing and submitting, and tracking filing statuses such as Awaiting Approval, Filed and Return Not Filed. It notes the 150 MB submission limit, that drafts remain in the system for 90 days, and that the filer is responsible for omitting or redacting protected information because the Clerk of Court will not review filings for that.
