The Minnesota Department of Corrections explains that effective July 1, 2024 the Supervised Release Board has authority to grant parole to certified adults, indeterminate and life-sentenced individuals, and people convicted of certain criminal sexual conduct offenses once they have served their minimum term of imprisonment, known as the Parole Eligibility Date. The Board conducts an initial review of readiness for release three years before the minimum term is reached and then at intervals it determines, and the page states plainly that there is no statutory provision allowing release before the minimum eligibility date. The Board considers information collected from facility staff, the community where the person was sentenced, and any surviving family members of the victim, and at each review it either assigns a projected release date or continues the case with directives to complete before the next review. The Hearings and Release Unit maintains the review schedule and works with the committing county and the facility case worker.
