The South Dakota DOC's Family and Friends page is the state's central guide for contacting someone in SDDOC custody. Mail must include the offender's name and DOC number plus a complete, legible return address or it may be rejected; printed matter must come directly from the publisher, distributor or an institution of higher learning, books from third-party marketplaces such as Amazon or eBay are not permitted, and hardcover or wire-bound books and mailings with more than twelve photos are subject to rejection. Offenders cannot receive incoming calls and must request that a number be added to their approved phone list; VoIP numbers are not permitted. Tablet messaging runs through Getting Out at selected facilities, with no photos and all messages reviewed. For visitation, everyone wishing to visit or send funds must complete a visitation application, visitors aged 18 and over undergo a background check, approved visitors renew annually, and all visits must be pre-scheduled at least 72 hours in advance.
